- Guest choreographer Ayodele Casel worked with dance and jazz students to create an interdisciplinary tap work titled “Summertime” accompanied by the Gershwin standard arranged by the jazz trio. This world premiere concluded Juilliard’s livestreamed convocation ceremony.
- Improvisation Intensive: Workshop for Dance and Jazz with Jamar Roberts
- Arnhold Creative Associate Jamar Roberts led dance and jazz students in a weeklong exploration of improvisation accompanied by music ranging from classic standards to original compositions to free jazz.
- Synchronous Performance Across Continents In C
- Terry Riley’s minimalist masterpiece In C was played simultaneously by Juilliard musicians at Lincoln Center and musicians from Tianjin Juilliard, who were projected within the Peter Jay Sharp Theater to bring together nearly three dozen performers across 7,000 miles. The screen reflected the musicians in China alongside pre-recorded footage of Juilliard dance students improvising to the score.
- Giants of 21 Century Repertory: Spring Dances 2023 with Brown, Peck, Schecter, and Walerski
- Spring Dances 2023 featured works by choreographers Camille A. Brown, Justin Peck, Hofesh Schechter, and Medhi Walerski with student musicians performing works by Philip Glass, J.S. Bach, and Jonathan Melville Pratt in an original arrangement commissioned by Juilliard from composition alum Shelbie Rassler.
- Film Scoring + Beyond with Germaine Franco
- Grammy-winning film composer (Encanto), conductor, songwriter, arranger, record producer, and percussionist Germaine Franco visited campus for a multiday residency. Arnhold Creative Associate Nicholas Britell led a conversation with Franco about her career, life, and perspectives on music as a portal for storytelling as part of the Film Scoring Lecture Series. Franco also met with the fourth-year actors from the Drama Division to discuss career pathways in the film industry and led a percussion workshop on recording techniques for session musicians and the use of percussion in modern film scoring.
- Batsheva @ Juilliard with Ohad Naharin
- Israeli dancer, choreographer, founder of Gaga, and Juilliard alum Ohad Naharin returned to campus with members of Batsheva Dance Company to lead the Dance Division in a multiday workshop that engaged all of the division’s 90+ dancers. The visit culminated in auditions for Batsheva Dance Company which resulted in fourth-year dancer Kelis Robinson joining the Ensemble.

- New Dances: Edition 2021 featured world premieres by choreographers Rena Butler, Norbert De La Cruz III, Justin Peck, and Creative Associate Caili Quan with student musicians performing works by Brahms and alum Nathan Prillaman.
- Restoring Graham’s Deep Song at Focus 2022
- Faculty member and former Graham Company principal dancer Terese Capucilli coached two dance students on Martha Graham’s solo Deep Song in fall 2021, restoring the work to the original music by Henry Cowell. Deep Song was presented as part of the Focus festival in January with a live chamber ensemble of student musicians performing Cowell’s score, which had been lost for decades.

- Juilliard musicians, dancers, and actors created a dynamic interdisciplinary performance film, Watch Me Fill This Space, inspired by renga—a genre of Japanese collaborative poetry—to conclude the livestreamed convocation ceremony.
- Virtual Ensembles: Works by Alumni Philip Glass + Wynton Marsalis + The Making of Bolero Juilliard
- Juilliard’s Virtual Gala featured the Juilliard Orchestra and Juilliard Jazz Orchestra virtually performing a selection of Swing Symphony by Juilliard Jazz Director Wynton Marsalis, conducted by David Robertson, as well as Knee Play 5 from Einstein on the Beach by Philip Glass with Creative Associates Nico Muhly and Nadia Sirota, alumni, and students from the music, drama, and preparatory divisions. Using signature works by alumni composers as core programming underlines the new emphasis on Juilliard’s creative power, inspiring new generations by example and their own participation in the performances. The Virtual Gala also featured a rare glimpse behind the scenes at the making of Bolero Juilliard, the landmark virtual collaboration of Juilliard students and alumni, that presented a portrait of artists amid the COVID-19 crisis.

- Co-presentation of The Mother of Us All
- Hailed by the New York Times as the best classical music performance of 2020, Juilliard collaborated with the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s MetLiveArts series and the New York Philharmonic to co-present Virgil Thomson’s The Mother of Us All that celebrated the centennial of the 19th Amendment.
- Spring Dances 2020
- Juilliard moved forward with enhancements for Spring Dances 2020 by engaging the singers of Broadway Inspirational Voices and conductor Michael McElroy to perform the traditional chain gang songs alongside the company of dancers for the March performances of Donald McKayle’s Rainbow ’Round My Shoulder. Unfortunately, Spring Dances 2020 was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic.
